General FAQ's
Q: Who are you?

A: The board members of Legal Assistance for Warriors are veterans who understand that a service member serving in a dangerous situation cannot afford the distraction of worrying about a legal issue that arises at home.

Our board members have served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East... from NCO's to Generals. We all share the same goal, to support our present day warriors and contribute to their safety to the best of our ability.

Many of our volunteer lawyers are veterans or have close family connections to veterans. Their service to our warriors is their contribution.

Q: How long have you been around?

A: Our organization was officially formed on January 9, 2010 when the articles of incorporation for a non-profit corporation were filed with the State of Florida.

Q: How can I receive copies of your IRS exemption application?

A: The IRS exemption application and tax exemption ruling letter is available by clicking on the link provided in the second paragraph on the home page.

FAQ's for Troops
Q: Who do you represent?

A: We represent service members who are deployed to hostile fire zones as well as the spouses and dependant children of those members who have legal problems that arise or are pending during deployment. We also represent veterans who return from deployment and have legal issues which arise as a result of their military service.

Q: I am a veteran who would like to take legal action against the Veterans Administration because they have denied my claim for benefits. Will you represent me?

A: We do not represent veterans who have claims against the VA. There are other organizations which specialize in that type of case.

Q: What is the geographical location that you serve in the U.S.?

A: Our administrative office is located in Orlando, Florida, but we have volunteer lawyers ready to take cases in several counties in Florida. If we do not have a volunteer lawyer already in your area, we will try to find one for you. The nature of your legal issue will also be important in determining if we have a lawyer in your area who can serve you. For example, we have a volunteer lawyerin New York who handles bankruptcy issues, but not one who handles child custody actions.

We expect the scope of the services we provide to increase as word of our organization spreads.

FAQ's for Donors
Q: Are you a non-profit organization?

A: Yes. Legal Assistance for Warriors, Inc. is a non profit corporation founded under the laws of the State of Florida. We are registered as a charity authorized to solicit and receive charitable donations by the state of Florida.

The IRS determined our organization qualifies as a 501(c)(3) public charity. The effective date for this determination is January 9, 2010.

Q: How much of my donation goes to the operation of your organization?

A: 100%. If you click on the donate button it will take you to PayPal where you can pay by credit card or by a PayPal account. The standard PayPal processing fee is deducted by PayPal. The remainder comes directly to us, not through a professional fundraiser.

Q: What do you do with the money that is donated?

A: We pay our operating expenses which include staff and office expenses, postage, website fees, advertising etc. Anything left goes into a fund from which court costs, court reporter fees and other necessary cost of litigation may be taken for troops who cannot afford those expenses.

Q: How large is your staff and what are they paid?

A: We have only one paid staff member. That person is a lawyer licensed to practice in Florida. At this point she is working without pay until we can afford to pay her. She has agreed to work for the pay and benefits of a starting lawyer in our community.
